Labile blood products

Biolog-id has developed a labile blood product traceability process (PSL), by attaching an RFID label to each blood sac.

This process allows data capture and reading all along the transfusion chain as well as the management, in real time, of the blood products stored in refrigerated enclosures.

In addition, it allows tracing and controlling of the bags's temperatures, recorded along the different flows, more particularly during the transport and storage in enclosure phases.

Optimisation of transfusion security

This solution allows capturing, modifying and updating the medico-legal secured information at a distance and at will.  This information could be donor identification, group ABO Rh, phenol-typage Kell, expiry date, return due date,...

What is new is that the operator is able to take charge and efficiently manage the information judged indispensable to the transfusion security (entry and exit date for each sac in the refrigerated enclosure, preservation conditions control...) thanks to major technological contributions. The most striking developments of these being:

• Electronic labels RFID,
• "Intelligent" refrigerated enclosure,
• Temperature management module
• Interfaces covering flow, refrigerated enclosure/data processing repository/blood setting up data processing.

This original approach for quality management allows the participants of the transfusion sector to have a better view of:

• The traceability of the transfusion products, particularly regarding the temperature during the transport and storage phases,
• The condition of their stock in real time,
• The cost control.

Contribution to the solution

In this manner, each transfusion establishment is able to:

• Know in real time the condition of the stock and the status of each blood bag preserved in the care establishments,
• Re-stock blood sacs that have been distributed, but not used and returned by the care establishments, at the same time bringing proof of their being maintained in correct preservation conditions, in particular regarding the temperature,
• Pick up the management anomalies, evaluate them and set up preventative and remedial actions,
• If necessary, reallocate the bag to another care establishment, ...

Respond to challenges that are sanitary and economic at the same time, by supplying the participants with a tool capable of serious revision and even suppress "completely" the number of bags destroyed because of lack of traceability.

Furthermore, this solution allows each care establishment to:

• Guarantee the quality of the transfused products through a compatible tool with a strong demand for security and efficiency,
• Seriously reduce the operational costs, automatically control the restocking, secure and facilitate the use of the repository, ...
